517 Fort Street, Victoria, BC

The historic Custom House Building at 517 Fort Street has always caught my attention on my many walks through downtown Victoria.  Built in 1905 for BC Electric Railway by Francis Mawson Rattenbury, it is in the classic and simple Edwardian style.

I traveled to Europe in the spring of 2012 and I noticed that there is an extreme lack of hostels that cater to the 30 year and older demographic.  Upon further research, I found that Victoria hostels have ignored this specific clientele as well.  A hostel, located on the upper 2 floors will focus on a more mature clientele.  This will be achieved by providing a relaxed atmosphere that allows the patrons to enjoy the community feel that a traditional hotel does not provde while discouraging a 'party' environment.

My interest in jazz came from movies such as The Great Gatsby and A Street Car Named Desire.  My sister and I had a discussion about the lack of locations that play jazz music and provide an appropriate atmosphere.  I enjoy listening to jazz and would like to bring a different vibe to Victoria which currently has only one club.  This conversation and my passion for jazz music inspired the Pelican State Jazz Club.
The Pelican State Jazz Club is to be located on the main floor.  It will attract a demographic in the 19-65 range as this market of jazz lovers has not been tapped into in this community

All of the images below are excerpts from book I created of the entire project. The working drawings were created using AutoCAD.

Station House Hostel

The hostel was developed through the design development phase, while the jazz club was taken through to design solution/final design phase.
